Federal Personal Tax Rates

The last time personal federal tax rates changed were with Paul Martin's budget on October 18, 2000, other than Harper's government increased the tax rate on the bottom tax bracket (the poorest people) from 15% to 15.25% in 2006 and 15.5% in 2006.  The brackets for these rates are indexed for inflation, but are currently as follows:

15.25% on taxable income up to $36,378 in 2006

22% on taxable income from $36,378 to $72,756 in 2005

26% on taxable income from $71,190 to $118,285 in 2005

29% on taxable income over $118,525 in 2005

In Alberta, the 10% flat tax would be added to each of these figures, to determine your total tax rate.

The other thing that needs to be taken into consideration are the tax exemptions.  The federal government has tax exemptions of $9,039 personal and $7,675 for a dependant spouse for 2006.

In B.C., the personal tax as shown in the opposite column would be added to each of these figures, to determine your total taxes payable.
